Seat's Taken

Burlington City Arts presents Seat’s Taken, a group exhibition designed to continue the community-wide dialogue initiated by ECHO Lake Aquarium and Science Center’s recent exhibition, RACE: Are We So Different?. Seat’s Taken aims to move the discussion beyond race to examine the larger issue of why human beings wrong one another, as race is just one variable in a complex equation. The exhibition examines human interaction, questions the way we choose to navigate the world, and challenges our reactions to the unfamiliar, uncomfortable, and different. Artists include our own Angelo Arnold.

Opening Reception and Artist Talk: Friday, January 25, 5-8pm

Member Preview Event: Thursday, January 24, 5:30-7:30pm

Reimagining the Flynn Center

The School of Architecture + Art kicked off the semester with an All-School Charette reimagining Burlington's Flynn Center with 4 different projects.  Below are the 4 projects and the winning teams.

Project 1: The Public Edge: First Impressions and the Magic Within

The Flynn Center is more than just a auditorium and a schedule of events. Its mission is to create a locus for the arts. For many people the crafting of art and theater is as interesting as the final performance. Students re-thought the intersection of the Flynn Campus and its most public exposure through the facades along Main Street.

Project 2: The Gallery: Revealing the Art in the Art

The Gallery is at the front of the house and provides a venue where work by Vermont’s many visual artists may be exhibited. The Flynn would like to expand the nature of how this space is used and the opportunities it provides for interacting with art and artists. Students increased the occupancy and utility of this space from a quiet gallery to active salon: a café-like, pre-show and post-show gathering space where theatergoers can meet performers after a show, or talk with the artists whose work is on exhibit. They considered how the intensity and the energy of an artist’s process can be revealed in this space.
